VP Dhankhar Calls on Students to Break Language Barriers in Science and Technology, Advocates for Interdisciplinary Learning

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Vision for Education at IIT Jodhpur’s 10th Convocation

On October 26, 2023, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered an inspiring address at the 10th Convocation of IIT Jodhpur, where he emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers in education, particularly those related to language. His remarks resonated with the audience, highlighting a progressive vision for the future of education in India.

Language as a Barrier in Learning

In his speech, Dhankhar pointed out that foreign languages should not serve as insurmountable obstacles to mastering critical fields such as sciences, medicine, and technology. He argued that the ability to learn and innovate should not be hindered by the language of instruction. This perspective is particularly relevant in a country as linguistically diverse as India, where students often face challenges in understanding complex subjects taught in a foreign language.

Embracing a Harmonious Blend of Knowledge

Dhankhar encouraged students to embrace a non-traditional approach to education, advocating for a harmonious blend of "Gyaan" (knowledge) and "Vigyan" (science). Under the National Education Policy (NEP), students now have the flexibility to pursue interdisciplinary studies, allowing them to combine their core subjects with areas like economics or music. This approach aims to foster a more holistic educational experience, equipping students with a diverse skill set that transcends conventional boundaries.

The Importance of Mother Tongue Education

A significant highlight of Dhankhar’s address was his emphasis on the value of education in one’s mother tongue. He commended IIT Jodhpur for being the first institution in India to offer engineering and technology courses in local languages. By doing so, the institution is paving the way for a more inclusive educational environment. Dhankhar pointed out that many countries excelling in engineering and technology do not rely on foreign languages for instruction. He cited examples such as Japan, Germany, and China, where education in native languages has not hindered technological advancement.

India’s Economic Aspirations

Turning to the broader economic landscape, Dhankhar articulated a vision for India to escape the middle-income trap and emerge as a developed nation by 2047, coinciding with the centennial celebrations of India’s independence. He asserted that achieving an eightfold increase in per capita income is both reachable and essential. This ambitious goal requires collective action and a focus on creating meaningful employment opportunities that elevate the nation’s position in the global economy.

Technological Leadership in the Digital Economy

Dhankhar also highlighted India’s pioneering role in the digital economy, noting the remarkable achievement of averaging 466 million digital transactions daily. He praised the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for revolutionizing transactions in India, making digital payments accessible and efficient. This technological adaptation has not only transformed the domestic landscape but has also garnered international attention, positioning India as a model for digital innovation.

A Call to the Youth

In closing, Vice-President Dhankhar made a heartfelt appeal to the youth of India. He urged them to recognize their strengths and potential, emphasizing that the world is eager to engage with India’s growth story. He encouraged young minds to reject a pessimistic outlook and instead embrace optimism and ambition. By doing so, they can become the driving force behind a prosperous and self-reliant India, ready to take on the challenges of the future.

Through his address, Dhankhar painted a picture of an inclusive, innovative, and ambitious educational landscape in India, one that empowers students to transcend traditional barriers and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth and development.
