This dedicated group is spearheading an exciting new chapter for soccer in Belmont County, Ohio, as they work tirelessly to establish a vibrant soccer community in a region that has long been underserved in this beloved sport.

A New Home for Soccer Enthusiasts

Nestled in the western portion of Belmont County is a sprawling 28-acre recreational site known as the Belmont County Sports Complex. Originally created in 1986 as part of a reclamation project, this complex has been primarily utilized for youth baseball. However, the recent establishment of Belmont Soar FC marks a significant shift in focus, as the club aims to cultivate a love for soccer among local youth.

Currently, the complex features two youth soccer fields designated for U10 and U12 teams. But the vision doesn’t stop there. Plans are already underway to expand the facility to include three additional fields, along with various amenities to enhance the experience for players and families alike.

Growing the Game from the Ground Up

Belmont Soar FC President and Coach Jaclyn Ketter emphasizes the club’s commitment to nurturing soccer talent in the community. “Right now, we are holding practices and just trying to grow soccer in our community,” she explains. Despite being a non-profit organization for only 11 months, the club has made remarkable strides, expanding from a single team to two teams in that short time frame.

Ketter’s enthusiasm is palpable as she shares the club’s aspirations: “We’d like to start having U4, U6, and U8 teams play in the spring and then be able to offer programs all the way up to U14 and the high school level.” Her vision is clear: to create a soccer-friendly environment in southeastern Ohio, a region that has historically been more focused on other sports.

A Nod to Local Heritage

The name “Belmont Soar FC” pays homage to the local community, particularly the Union Local Jets. Ketter explains, “We wanted to give a nod to Union Local and western Belmont County. They are the Jets.” This connection to local pride is essential for fostering a sense of belonging among players and families.

Empowering Young Athletes

Currently, the club boasts 40 girls, a unique aspect that sets Belmont Soar FC apart. Ketter emphasizes the importance of starting young: “We want to start young and teach them the basics and rules of soccer so they learn the correct way from the beginning.” The club aims to provide comprehensive information about the sport, including rules and pricing, to ensure accessibility for all interested families.

Ketter’s passion for soccer is deeply personal. Growing up in St. Clairsville, she played soccer and now wants to provide similar opportunities for the youth of Belmont County. “Too many high schools around here don’t have soccer programs, but I think if we help them learn about it now, that will only benefit everyone down the road,” she reflects.

Community Support and Future Plans

Belmont Soar FC is not just about soccer; it’s about building a community. Board member Devin Cain shares the excitement of finally having a dedicated space for practices. “We’ve never had a field of our own to be able to practice on,” he says. The club has faced challenges in securing field time, but the partnership with the Belmont County Commissioners has opened doors for future development.

Looking ahead, Cain envisions a playground for younger siblings and a concession stand to enhance the overall experience at the complex. “The more they see it, the more they will want to play,” he notes, highlighting the importance of creating an inviting atmosphere for families.

A Call for Community Involvement

As the club continues to grow, the need for community involvement becomes increasingly vital. Treasurer Katie Fowkes emphasizes, “What we need to make this work are donations, community involvement, and parent involvement to help develop that for the future.” The success of Belmont Soar FC hinges on the support of local families and businesses, as they work together to create a sustainable soccer program.

The Future of Soccer in Belmont County

With the excitement surrounding soccer in America, fueled by the achievements of stars like Lionel Messi and the U.S. Women’s National Team, Belmont Soar FC is poised to tap into this growing interest. Ketter’s vision for the club is not just about soccer; it’s about creating a legacy that will inspire future generations. “Hopefully, this project will outlast all of us that are involved right now,” she concludes, embodying the spirit of hope and determination that drives Belmont Soar FC forward.
