The Illini Run Club was founded in August by Connor Brown and Ryan Miller, two sophomores majoring in Business. Their vision extended beyond simply gathering a group of runners; they aimed to cultivate a sense of community and camaraderie among students. “We were inspired by the success and growing popularity of run clubs across the U.S., particularly in Chicago,” Brown shared. “My co-founder and I saw a great opportunity to bring that same vibrant energy and sense of community to UIUC, where we felt there was a need for a more active, social space on campus.”

The rapid growth of the Illini Run Club can largely be attributed to its savvy use of social media, particularly Instagram. Within just a few weeks of its inception, the club caught the attention of students scrolling through their feeds. Max Ando, a fifth-year student in the College of Fine and Applied Arts (FAA), recounted how he discovered the club: “I saw it on social media on a couple of friends’ stories, and then that morning a friend of mine texted me asking if I wanted to join them.” This organic spread of information showcases how social media can effectively connect individuals with shared interests.

The club accommodates a range of paces, from seven-minute miles to 12-minute miles, making it a welcoming space for runners at all levels.
