The Legacy of Jerry Brock: A Pillar of Marietta High Soccer
Jerry Brock’s influence on the Marietta High School boys soccer program is nothing short of monumental. From his early days as a community organizer to his tenure as head coach from 1986 to 1999, Brock’s dedication and vision have shaped the landscape of soccer in Southeast Ohio. His contributions have not only established Marietta High as a premier program for both boys and girls soccer but have also left an indelible mark on the community.
The Birth of Competitive Soccer in Marietta
Brock’s journey into the world of soccer began in 1981 when he helped establish the Marietta Soccer League. This initiative was born out of a desire to provide children with the opportunity to play soccer, a sport that was gaining popularity across the nation. "My kids played soccer at the YMCA," Brock recalls. "They got to liking the game, so we created a league for younger kids, and it started to develop." This grassroots effort laid the foundation for what would eventually become a thriving soccer culture in Marietta.
By 1985, Brock’s efforts culminated in the formation of a varsity soccer team at Marietta High School. His passion for the sport and commitment to youth development led him to take on the role of head coach the following year. "The coach quit after one year," he explained. "I had a couple sons who played, so I called up the athletic director and asked, ‘What’s happening?’ He said, ‘We don’t have a coach.’ Next thing I know, I’m the coach. It was so fun I kept doing it."
Building a Home for Soccer
One of Brock’s significant achievements was overseeing the Marietta Soccer League’s acquisition of land in Devola, which is now known as Jerry Brock Field. This facility has become the home pitch for the Tigers, providing a dedicated space for practice and competition. The establishment of this complex was a pivotal moment for the program, allowing it to grow and flourish in a supportive environment.
A Record of Success
During his 14 seasons as head coach, Brock compiled an impressive record of 179 wins, 72 losses, and 18 draws. Under his leadership, the Tigers secured nine Southeast Ohio Athletic League championships, eight sectional championships, and five district championships. His coaching prowess earned him recognition as a two-time SEOAL Coach of the Year and a two-time District Coach of the Year.
Brock’s coaching philosophy emphasized not just winning but also fostering a love for the game among his players. "I had a lot of fun coaching," he said, reflecting on his time with the team. This joy was evident in the way his players responded to his leadership, many of whom have gone on to contribute to the program in various capacities.
A Lasting Impact
Even after stepping down as head coach in 1999, Brock’s influence continued to resonate within the program. Todd Morris, one of Brock’s former players, took over as head coach and has been at the helm for 17 years. Morris recently celebrated his 200th career victory, a milestone that he attributes to the strong foundation laid by Brock. "To get 200 on this pitch in our 40th season of soccer with Jerry going into the Hall of Fame this year, all kinds of good things going on," Morris remarked after a recent win.
Brock expressed pride in Morris’s accomplishments, stating, "He’s just been tremendous and loyal and willing to stick with it and work hard. I think a lot of Todd." This continuity of coaching has been crucial in maintaining the program’s success and ensuring that the values instilled by Brock continue to thrive.
Cherished Memories
While Brock’s coaching record is impressive, it is the memories and experiences shared with his players that he cherishes most. He recalls a particularly chaotic tournament game in Lancaster, where a lack of referees delayed the match for hours. "It started getting really dark, and we’re in a kickoff," he reminisced. "We had to have people turn on their car lights on each side of the field." Despite the challenges, the Tigers emerged victorious, a testament to their resilience and teamwork.
Recognition and Honor
Brock’s contributions to Marietta High School soccer have not gone unnoticed. He will be inducted into the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024, an honor he views with humility. "For someone who wasn’t a particularly great athlete, to end in a hall of fame for athletes is neat," he said. This recognition is a fitting tribute to a man whose passion and dedication have transformed the soccer landscape in Marietta.
As the Marietta High boys soccer program continues to thrive, it stands as a testament to Jerry Brock’s vision, hard work, and unwavering commitment to the sport. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his players, the community, and the ongoing success of the program he helped build from the ground up.
