Belmont Soar FC: A New Era for Soccer in Belmont County
A New Home for Soccer Enthusiasts
In the heart of Belmont County, a significant transformation is underway at the Belmont County Sports Complex, a sprawling 28-acre recreational site that has recently become the home of the Belmont Soar FC. Established in 1986 as part of a reclamation project, this complex has primarily served local youth baseball teams. However, with the emergence of Belmont Soar FC, the area is poised to become a vibrant hub for soccer, aiming to cultivate a love for the sport among local youth.
Building from the Ground Up
Currently, the complex boasts two youth soccer fields designated for U10 and U12 teams. However, the vision for Belmont Soar FC extends far beyond these initial offerings. Plans are in place to develop three additional fields, along with various amenities that will enhance the experience for players and spectators alike. “Right now we are holding practices and just trying to grow soccer in our community,” said Jaclyn Ketter, the club’s President and Coach. “This is the very beginning stages of our complex development.”
Despite being a non-profit organization for only 11 months, Belmont Soar FC has made remarkable strides. Starting with just one team, the club has already expanded to two teams, demonstrating a rapid growth trajectory. “We had no complex and no field space. Now we have partnered with the Belmont County Commissioners and have plans to develop five fields,” Ketter explained. This partnership is crucial for the club’s future, as it aims to create a sustainable soccer environment for years to come.
Aiming for Inclusivity and Growth
Belmont Soar FC is not just focused on the present; it has ambitious plans for the future. Ketter expressed a desire to introduce teams for younger age groups, including U4, U6, and U8, with hopes of expanding all the way up to U14 and high school levels. “The southeastern part of Ohio is so rural and not very soccer friendly,” she noted. “We would like to open that up in Belmont County and, hopefully, extend out to neighboring counties in an attempt to grow soccer in this area.”
The club’s name, “Soar,” pays homage to the local Union Local Jets, reflecting a community spirit that resonates deeply with its members. Currently, the club has 40 girls enrolled, which is a unique aspect of its formation. Ketter emphasized the importance of starting young, teaching the fundamentals of soccer to instill a strong foundation for future players. “Soccer is the World’s sport. It’s finally coming to America, and with what Lionel Messi and the U.S. Women’s National team has accomplished, there’s a surge of excitement and interest in the sport,” she remarked.
A Personal Connection to the Game
For Ketter, soccer is more than just a sport; it’s a passion that has been woven into her life. “I grew up in St. Clairsville playing soccer, and my daughter is involved now. We just want to see the youth of Belmont County have more opportunities,” she shared. The lack of soccer programs in local high schools has been a concern, but Ketter believes that by nurturing young talent now, the community can foster a thriving soccer culture in the future.
Devin Cain, a member of the Belmont Soar Board of Directors, echoed Ketter’s sentiments. “We’ve never had a field of our own to practice on,” he said. The club’s journey to find a suitable location led them to the Belmont County Sports Complex, where they saw potential for growth. “This is a huge facility with a lot of ground,” Cain added, highlighting the possibilities that lie ahead.
Future Plans and Community Involvement
Looking ahead, the club has exciting plans to enhance the complex further. Cain mentioned the intention to build a playground for younger siblings, ensuring that families can enjoy their time at the fields. “The more they see it, the more they will want to play,” he noted. Additionally, Ketter mentioned plans for a concession stand and bleachers to accommodate spectators, making the complex a welcoming environment for all.
To realize these ambitious goals, community support is essential. Katie Fowkes, the club’s treasurer, emphasized the need for donations and active involvement from parents and local residents. “What we need to make this work are donations, community involvement, and parent involvement to help develop that for the future,” she stated.
As Belmont Soar FC embarks on this exciting journey, it stands as a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and a shared passion for soccer. With a clear vision and dedicated leadership, the club is set to make a lasting impact on the local sports landscape, inspiring the next generation of soccer players in Belmont County.
